American chipmaker Micron Technology has announced plans to build a second manufacturing facility in Taiwan. The new facility will be established at the Tongluo site, which the company recently acquired from Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp.
According to a Reuters report, the facility will help Micron expand the supply of advanced DRAM products, including high-bandwidth memory (HBM), to meet the growing demand driven by artificial intelligence applications. Construction at the Tongluo site is scheduled to begin by the end of fiscal year 2026. Micron also stated that it has completed the acquisition of PSMC’s Tongluo P5 site, and the new facility will be similar in scale to its existing fab in Miaoli County.
Micron Opens Semiconductor Facility in Gujarat
Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Micron’s ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging) plant in Sanand, Gujarat. At the inauguration, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor remarked, “India's role in the global semiconductor supply chain is not just welcome, it is essential under the leadership of your great PM. As other nations in this neighborhood aggressively expand production of legacy chips and seek to dominate the sector, India offers the secure and reliable alternative.”
Government Plans New $11 Billion Fund to Support Chipmaking in India
A recent Bloomberg report revealed that India is preparing to launch a new $11 billion fund to support domestic chipmaking. Expected within the next two to three months, the initiative will provide subsidies for chip design projects, manufacturing equipment, and supply chain development. The report highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is accelerating India’s semiconductor campaign as part of his broader vision to establish the country as a global manufacturing hub. Although India’s chip industry is still in its early stages, the government aims to replicate its success in attracting Apple, which now assembles 25% of iPhones in India.
